The Cambridge Symposiums on Knowledge in Education bring together those interested in exploring the meaning and role of knowledge in education. Contributors are what Maton and Moore (2010) called ‘a coalition of minds’, scholars working within a set of assumptions about knowledge, education and the curriculum referred to loosely as ‘social realism’. Their work is a reaction against the instrumentalism of education policies and the superficiality of much educational theorising. Knowledge is taken seriously, both what it is and who it is for. The focus is on the notion of powerful knowledge, knowledge that enables participation in ‘society’s conversation’.
